The Story Behind the Movement

“My advocacy didn’t begin in a boardroom—it began in a motel room, surrounded by four traumatized children, with no access to the proceeds from the sale of our home, and a legal system that repeatedly failed to protect us. Despite 14 police reports, a protective order, and clear documentation of terrifying behavior, the court removed my children from that protection. Even after three of them were hospitalized for suicidal concerns stemming from the trauma they endured, the system looked away.

I’ve watched the institutions meant to defend families instead defend dysfunction. When I launched a GoFundMe to survive, the person I was escaping tried to have it shut down in court. When I expressed gratitude online, my Facebook account was hacked, and a photo was maliciously planted to suggest reconciliation with the very person I was divorcing under court protection.

But this isn’t just my story—it’s the story of thousands of women navigating courtrooms and communities that do not yet understand abuse, and who often fail to adequately protect survivors. H.E.R. Wings Unfold was born not out of convenience, but from crisis—from a deep, burning belief that women deserve more than survival.

Today, I am still healing. But I am also rising. I’m learning what it means to not only reclaim my life—but to truly rise above the ashes and to help myself and others learn to truly soar.”
